Create your Escape-Gift

Step-by-step help

1. How do I create an Escape-Gift?

Go to https://game.escape-gift.com/en/ and click the occasion you’re interested in:

Home screen of the creation area: “Choose a theme to create your Escape-Gift” (Wedding, Pregnancy announcement, Birth announcement, Declaration, Gifts), with a finger on Wedding

Next, you have two options:

  1. Start from a template that comes with a ready-made scenario, and personalize it.

  2. Create your own game from scratch.

“Escape Wedding” screen: “Start from a template!” (ready-made scenario, quick, customizable) or “Create your own game” (creative, original, tailor-made)

1. If you start from a template, you land on a page showing all the existing scenarios. To see an example of a game, click “Test”; to personalize it, click “Select”:

List of wedding templates (Message secret, Casino Royal, Surprise Party, Belle Histoire) with their “Test” and “Choose” buttons

When you click “Select”, the template is copied into your creation area and you can start personalizing it:

Scenario tab of the “Message secret” template: intro message and riddles marked “To customize!”

2. If you create your own game, you first need to select the style you like. You can always change your mind later:

Style selection: four phone previews (Pastel Luxe, Water color, Way out, Nice Story), free or Premium, each with a “Select” button

Once you confirm your choice of style, a blank Escape-Gift is created in your personal space and you can start personalizing it:

Blank Escape-Gift in the Scenario tab: intro message to personalize and a “Start by adding 1 riddle” button

Perfect! Now we’re getting down to business: you can add riddles, rewards and clues to help the players.

2. How do I sign up?

To sign up, go to https://game.escape-gift.com/en/

  1. Choose an occasion (birth, wedding, birthday, etc.)

  2. Choose a creation mode (start from a template or create a game from scratch)

  3. Fill in the form below when prompted:

Form “To continue, sign up: it’s easy & free!”: last name, first name, email, password, individual or professional, and a Confirm button

And that’s it! You can access your profile by clicking the menu at the top right.

Account menu open on “Edit your profile”, above the “Your profile” form: last name, first name, address, email

3. How do I fill in an Escape-Gift?

For an Escape-Gift to work, it must contain at least:

  • An intro message
  • A riddle
  • A reward

Once these conditions are met, you can test your game and admire your fine creation!

If you create a blank Escape-Gift, you land on the following page.

Annotated Scenario tab: game type, style, intro message and the riddles block

As soon as a first riddle is added, a “final reward” block appears below the riddle block:

“Final reward” block below the first riddle: the message “We’re getting married, Save the Date!!!” and an illustration of a bride and groom

You’ll notice that the intro message and the reward are pre-filled, but we encourage you to personalize these fields: your players will love it!

If you start from a game template (a scenario to personalize), it works the same way, but the riddles are already pre-filled. Some are “one size fits all”, others need to be adapted to your situation. We flag those with a red “To customize!” label:

Annotated game template: a riddle to personalize marked “To customize!”, a “one size fits all” riddle and the final reward

There you go, now you know what the “Scenario” tab is for! Here’s a summary:

Summary of the Scenario tab: choose your look, write a juicy intro, create your riddles, clues and rewards, add your final reward

4. How do I add a riddle?

To add a riddle, go to the “Scenario” tab of your Escape-Gift and click “Add a riddle”:

Annotated Scenario tab: the “Add another riddle” button below the first riddle

You land on the following page. If you’re looking for inspiration, start from one of our suggestions; if you know what you want, create your own riddle:

Riddle selection: pre-filled suggestions (Charming, Brainy or Geeky, Fun or Teasing, Cheeky) or blank riddles (text, number, date, infinite hangman)

Then write the wording of your riddle and the right answer that will unlock your reward:

Text riddle creation screen: the question, the accepted answers one per line, and the messages for right and wrong answers

Optionally, you can choose to reveal a reward that the player unlocks once they find the right answer. Careful, this is not the final reward of your treasure hunt!

You can also add a specific avatar to this riddle; this is a Premium option 😎

Options tab of a riddle: organizer avatar (Premium option), photo, video or link gift

5. How do I add clues?

We recommend adding clues to guide the players toward the right answer!

To do so, expand your riddle and click “Add a clue”:

Expanded riddle, then the “Clue” form: number of attempts, text, link, photo and GPS coordinates

Clues appear after the number of failed attempts you enter in the first field.

Besides text, you can add a photo, a web link or a map to bring variety to your clues.

As for maps, you can guide the person to a place or send them to a point of interest in Google Maps or Google Street View mode (360° point of interest):

Geolocated clue: map centered on Buckingham Palace, latitude, longitude, zoom and map types (point of interest, walking, cycling or driving directions…)

Here’s an example of a clue in Street View mode:

Clue in Street View mode: “Guess where I was born!” above a street view

You can add several clues, so go for it!

If you’re short on inspiration or time to add clues, we also offer automatic help, which is on by default but can be turned off.

This help gives the player a clue after each wrong answer, and works like this:

  • Text riddles: the help reveals one letter of the right answer and the total number of letters (a bit like hangman)
  • Number, date and time riddles: the help tells you whether the wrong answer is too low or too high.
6. How do I test my game?

It’s really useful to be able to test the game before sending it, to make sure everything goes as planned.

To do so, use the test button at the bottom of the “Scenario” tab. You can test the game as many times as you like; each test automatically creates a new “Test” player in the player list. This Test player won’t appear in the final ranking.

Bottom of the Scenario tab: three riddles, the revealed surprise and the “Test your game” button

7. Do I have to pay anything?

It depends!

We have a free offer and a Premium offer. Here are our different plans:

Table of the Free, Premium and Pro plans: included options, number of players and prices (Premium from €14.90 per game, Pro €249.90 per year)

In short, the Premium offer removes the ads and lets you take the personalization of your game further:

Two game screens compared: on the free plan, a default avatar and an ad banner; on Premium, a custom avatar, a choice of styles and no ads

And why are we talking about this now? Because if you have a cart to pay for, it has to be done now, just before the “Launch” step, which lets you share your Escape-Gift!

If you’ve chosen a Premium plan, the “Launch” tab turns into a cart: follow the instructions to pay securely (with PayPal or a card):

Cart tab: Premium options selected and choice of pack, from Small (15 players, €14.90) to Pro mode (2,500 players for one year, €249.90)

Once the payment is confirmed, you’ll land on the page shown in step 8 below!

8. How do I add players?

In Escape-Gift, each player has a personal web link (URL) to play. You have 2 ways to send them this link:

Launch tab: “Share this link in a group” (quick option) or “Register the players and notify them by email” (secure option)

1. The quick option: ask the players to enter their name and email themselves by sending them a self-registration link:

Game sharing window: copy the link, share it on social media or with a QR code

The players sign up as shown below, then receive a personal game link by email:

Self-registration page as seen by the player: last name, first name, email and a “Play” button

2. The manual option: enter their name and email yourself:

“Player registration” form: the player’s email and first name, “Add a player” and “Save” buttons

Once your player is registered, they appear in the list of registered players:

Player list: the player’s game link and the “Game email” button to send them the invitation

9. How do I start the game?

Now that you have your riddles, your clues and your players, you’re ready to start the game!

To do so, each player will receive the email below:

Invitation email “Freddy invites you to play”: your intro text and a “Let’s go!” button

There are two ways to send this email:

1. If you added the players yourself, you now have access to the page below, which lets you send the game invitation emails in one click or schedule them:

Player list: the player’s game link and the “Game email” button to send them the invitation

Players page: a “Schedule the game invitation” link above the player list

“Schedule sending” window: date and time of the automatic sending, or immediate invitation of all the players

2. If you chose the self-registration link, share it with the players using the tool of your choice: group email, messaging app, or carrier pigeon if you like!

The game link takes the players to the page below. Once they’ve filled in the form, they’ll receive an email with their personal game link.

Self-registration page as seen by the player: last name, first name, email and a “Play” button

10. How do I follow the players’ progress?

You can see at a glance who has signed up and how the players are progressing in the “Results” tab of your Escape-Gift:

Results tab: player counters and “Players’ progress” riddle by riddle

You can also choose the ranking mode that suits your needs; players can see the current scores once they’ve answered all the riddles.

How to make a great Escape-Gift

Find inspiration

Where to start? Blank-page syndrome can strike even the most creative among us when you don’t know where you’re heading. Here are a few tips to avoid that trap:

1. Think of the gift before wrapping it

If you first decide on the surprise you want to reveal, ideas for getting people to guess it will come naturally. For example, to reveal a funny video, I can have them guess the word “humor”:

“Which sense is so highly developed in you?”

2. Check out our suggestions

When you create a riddle, you can start from one of our suggestions. Click on them to get suggestions suited to your occasion!

Save the best for last

A well-crafted Escape-Gift builds suspense, with a guaranteed effect on the player.

To get there, don’t play your best cards right from the start!

For example, for a birthday, create 2 or 3 riddles with a fun or symbolic reward before revealing a bigger surprise.

Show you care

A shared memory, an old photo, a memorable anecdote… Words always hit harder when they come with proof, so use the toolkit Escape-Gift gives you to move your players!

For example, if the question is “What’s my favorite color?”, which answer would touch you most?

This one?

Plain answer: “I’ve loved green since I was little!”

or this one?

Personal answer: “I’ve loved green since I was little! It reminds me of the shelf at school, remember?”, with a photo of two children in a classroom

You decide 😋

Get the difficulty right

The secret of a great game is striking the right balance between suspense and difficulty. If it’s too hard, players will get discouraged. If it’s too easy, it loses its appeal.

That’s exactly what clues are for: they help you find that balance. Don’t hesitate to test your game and to have someone else test it, to check that your clues are in the right place.

As a rule of thumb, keep in mind that after more than 3 wrong answers without any extra help, players will start to get bored.

Not-so-silly questions

Escape what?

ESCAPE = as in escape game

GIFT = as in a present

ESCAPE-GIFT is a concept that combines escape games and gifts.

Players have to solve one or more riddles to reach a final surprise.

The ultimate goal? To reveal a message, an announcement or a gift in an original and memorable way.

How much does it cost?

It depends!

We have a free offer and a Premium offer. Here are our different plans:

Once the payment is confirmed, you’ll land on the “Launch” page, which lets you share your game!

Do I need to create an account to send an Escape-Gift?

Yes, my dear!

We need it to set up the personal space where you create your riddles and where your media and the players’ names are stored.

But rest assured, we never disclose any personal information to third parties.

And I promise, it’s super quick and nearly painless: a few fields, a password and off you go!

It all happens here: https://game.escape-gift.com/en/

Do players need to create an account and download an app to play?

No, none of that!

First, there’s no app: everything happens on a website designed for both mobile and desktop.

As for the players, we only need their email address, to make sure each player only plays once. There are smart alecks everywhere!

How many riddles can I add per Escape-Gift?

For now, as many as you like, so make the most of it!

How many clues can I add to a riddle?

For now, as many as you like, so make the most of it!

In what order do the riddles appear?

The riddles appear one at a time.

By default, they are listed in the order you created them.

You can easily reorder the riddles with the arrows at the bottom of their block.

What are the different types of riddles?

To add variety, we offer 4 types of riddles:

1. Text type:

The answer to find is a word or a series of words. When you create the riddle, you can enter several right answers, for example:

  • Riddle: “What do I love most about you?”
  • Right answers: “Eyes” or “The eyes” or “your eyes” or “my eyes”.

2. Number type:

The answer to find is a digit or a number. In this case, there’s only one right answer. After each wrong answer, the player automatically gets a “Too low!” or “Too high!” hint, so this type of riddle can be solved without any clues.

3. Date type:

The answer to find is a date. In this case, there’s only one right answer. After each wrong answer, the player automatically gets a “Too low!” or “Too high!” hint, so this type of riddle can be solved without any clues.

4. Infinite hangman type:

The answer to find is a word or a series of words. In this case, there’s only one right answer. The player can try:

  • A letter: if it’s in the right answer, it will appear in the words to find.
  • A full answer: if it’s right, they get the reward; if not, they try again, but get no indication of which letters are right or wrong.
Can I change the type of a riddle after creating it?

As you read in the previous section, there are 4 types of riddles, each with its own mechanics:

  1. Text type

  2. Number type

  3. Date type

  4. Infinite hangman type

For now, for technical reasons, you can’t change the type of a riddle once it has been created. For example, you can’t turn a “Text” riddle into a “Number” riddle.

However, you can reorder, delete and create as many riddles as you like!

How do I add a personal video as a reward?

We’ve chosen not to host videos for now.

But we have a simple solution for you:

  1. Upload your personal video to YouTube as private or unlisted.

  2. Add your YouTube link to the reward, like any other online YouTube video.

Careful: if you choose private mode, don’t forget to add the players’ email addresses in YouTube! The privacy settings are summed up nicely here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/157177

How private is an Escape-Gift?

Only the players who access the game can see the content of an Escape-Gift. It isn’t available anywhere else on the internet.

To access the riddles and rewards, a player needs a personal game link. There are 2 ways to generate & share this link:

  1. By adding the players yourself in your member area. The player list is closed and under your control.

  2. By sharing a self-registration link: the players enter their nickname and/or email address themselves. In this case the player list is open, and even if you control who you send the self-registration link to, a leak can always happen, so keep that in mind!

Diagram: with manual registration, a unique link is sent to each player; with self-registration, anyone who has the link can sign up
